Controlled Chaos

Northland Fishing Tackle’s new stamped-brass Thumper Spoon wreaks havoc with its prominent profile, flagrant flutters, and ninja kicker blade.

BEMIDJI, Minn. (October 8, 2024) – Tungsten has been all the talk. In fact, most of Northland’s recent product introductions for both ice and open water fishing have been tungsten based. But the one thing tungsten can’t do is tremble like a maple leaf falling from a tree. Such is not the case with stamped brass, however, and why Northland chose the functional metal for its new Thumper Spoon.

BLUE RACECAR

THE COMPOSITION

“The Thumper Spoon tumbles, flips, and shimmies on its slow fall,” said ice fishing icon and Northland pro, Brian “Bro” Brosdahl. “It looks like a minnow falling to its grave and can attract fish from long distances.”

The Thumper Spoon’s injured-baitfish action stems from its novel shape and stamped brass composition. Its precisely balanced, upside down teardrop figure causes dramatic fluttering on the freefall – chaotic, really. And when pumped on a long stroke, the spoon’s random-direction-generator sends it on a new course each time.

Revered ice fishing guide and Northland pro staffer, Brad Hawthorne, added: “The wide top and narrowed end really makes it wobble and flash.”

THE FLICKER

Northland added a willow flicker-blade near the top of the spoon to create an even more dynamic presentation. “The flicker-blade redirects even more light on the fall,” said Bro. “And when the spoon is down in the strike zone, by just shaking the rod, the blade activates and can trigger curious fish.”

The Thumper Spoon’s willow flicker-blade also clacks against the brass body to produce a bonus audible attractant.

The willow flicker-blade is sturdily affixed to the body with a split-ring.

WHEN AND WHERE TO FISH THE THUMPER SPOON

“The spoon really shines when you fish it high,” said Hawthorne about his tendency to work the Thumper Spoon above fish he marks on or near the bottom. “It grabs their attention as it tumbles down, mimicking a single wounded baitfish falling out of a school.”

Bro employs the Thumper Spoon as a search bait. “It’s perfect for fishing fast in depths of 15-feet or less when I’m looking for aggressive perch and walleyes. The smaller sizes do the same for crappies and bluegills, too.”

PICK A PATTERN

“It’s all about the flash with this spoon,” said Hawthorne. “Take a look at your dominant baitfish, and whether that’s shiners, tullibee, or gobies, match that color profile to the spoon.”

In clear water, Bro leans on flashy colors and perch patterns, selecting Blue Racecar, Purple Racecar, and Golden Perch. In dingier conditions, it’s Wonderbread, Sneeze, UV Pink Tiger, and Super-Glo Red Gold.

BAIT OR NO BAIT?

“In the winter, I always pair my spoon with some meat,” said Hawthorne, noting, too, that a minnow’s head, torso, and tail can all be utilized. “You’ll notice a big difference in action between different body parts. Sometimes, walleye like the head of a minnow, and other times, the different action created by the tail is what they want. Using the tail of a minnow makes the Thumper Spoon glide more.”

When Bro flips the spoon, it’s usually heads. “I use a minnow head most of the time searching for walleyes and perch. But if I’m fishing a deep soft bottomed basin for perch, crappies, or giant bluegills, it’s maggots and waxworms.”
