MN-FISH ANNOUNCES NEW BOARD MEMBERS & MINDTRUST FOR STATE ANGLING INITIATIVES

Fresh perspectives promise an increased commitment to Minnesota’s angling future.

Rogers, Minn. (November 11, 2024) — MN-FISH just added five new board members, building on the organization’s ability to carry the voices of the state’s diverse angling population to the state capitol and DNR.

In recent years, MN-FISH has made big strides on behalf of Minnesota anglers and the businesses that serve them. In 2023, MN-FISH successfully convinced the state legislature to invest $98.1 million to rebuild or update outdated hatcheries, modernize public water access and shore fishing locations throughout the state. Similarly, the organization raised $12 million for the construction of an invasive carp barrier on the Mississippi River to stop their upstream migration into other state waters.

Recent news of five new board members with diverse talents and backgrounds promises an even stronger organization for the remainder of 2024 into 2025.

“We had a number of great candidates interested in the MN-FISH mission, so like the rest of the organization, I’m incredibly excited to work with these people,” said MN-FISH president Ron Schara.

“It’s always good to introduce new perspectives and work with people who are anxious to get more involved in making our state’s fishing even better. We had a few resignations of seasoned board members and that helped open the door for new and fresh ways of approaching the state’s angling-related topics.”

“We have a lot of work to get done in the coming months and years,” said MN-FISH executive director and former DNR commissioner Mark Holsten. “That’s why it was important that we grew the board to 20 members to add additional resources and talent. New board members include Jeremy Smith of Lindner Media; Lake of the Woods Tourism Director, Joe Henry; Mille Lacs Lake resort owner/youth angling/radio host, Jason Bahr; hall of fame fishing communicator and guide, Ray Gildow; and Hmong community member and passionate tournament angler, Dr. Suav Kao Xiong.”

“Some of the areas we were looking at specifically were tourism, diversity, grant writing, and angler outreach and we were able to find candidates that were exceptional in each of these areas and bring them on,” said MN-Fish secretary Steve Pennaz. “I know they will be able to provide us with a fresh eyes and perspectives on how to improve the quality of fishing in Minnesota.”

Surveys and state licensing statistics reveal that 25% of Minnesota’s population consider themselves anglers—roughly 1.4 million persons. MN-FISH would like to thank this diverse Minnesota angling community for their continued support and voice in making these advances possible. Their engagement has been critical in our mission to Keep Minnesota Fishing Strong.
