FOOTHILL RANCH, CA (April 28, 2025) – The cartoon bubble for deep saltwater jigging often includes an exhausted angler pumping a broomstick rod and big clunky reel. That’s the perception, anyway. The reality, however, is that through advancements in rods, reels, lines, and Japanese influenced techniques, that saltwater jigging doesn’t have to be that way.

Over the last several years, DAIWA has been refining light jigging and super-light-jigging (SLJ) gear and techniques to bring finesse, and quite frankly, more fun to saltwater jigging.

Expanding on the immense success of DAIWA’s SALTIGA 15 SLJ reel, the forerunning company introduces the smaller and even more athletic 25SALTIGA^® 300.

“The new 25SALTIGA 300 is the next level in super-light-jigging,” said DAIWA Marketing Manager, Chris Martin. “It’s for the angler who has experience in the craft and wants even more finesse.”

Although smaller than the SALTIGA 15, the new 25SALTIGA 300 features a cavernous spool that will easily accommodate 370-yards of 20-lb. braid, spooled with line such as DAIWA J-BRAID X Grand or XBRAID X8.

Speaking of line, Martin noted a significant element of the new 25SALTIGA 300. “Uniquely, it features level winding like a baitcaster, so line is guided smoothly and evenly back and forth across the spool when you’re reeling. This prevents the problem experienced with most conventional reels of line piling up if you’re not carefully guiding it back onto the spool. Level winding puts your focus on fishing, not managing line.”

Martin next highlighted the shape of the 25SALTIGA 300’s frame. “Although still considered a round reel, you’ll appreciate the comfortable, tapered frame. The ergonomics bode well for maximum control and feel.”

Anode protection is another hallmark of the 25SALTIGA 300. “We included an anode washer on the gear sideplate,” explained Martin. “Without getting too deep in the weeds, the anode plate attracts corrosive materials, keeping them out of the reel’s inner workings, further protecting the reel from saltwater threats.” Martin also noted it’s for the same reason anode plates are applied to the lower units on inboard and outboard motors.

Species-wise, your usual suspects pair perfectly with the 25SALTIGA 300. Martin named species like red snapper, grouper, black seabass, flounder, as well as stripers up the east coast. On the Pacific side, he calls out rockfish and lingcod, as well as pelagics like tuna and yellowtail.

According to Martin, an assortment of DAIWA saltwater jigs are crafted for super-light-jigging, whether fishing vertical or slow pitching. “I like the DAIWA SALTIGA SK, KO Zakana, and SL Jigs for deep vertical fishing. The Mr. Slow Jig is excellent for pitching with its slower fall.”
